Herman B Wells Named President
Herman B Wells becomes president of Indiana University. After serving as acting president, Wells was the 11th president of Indiana University from 1938 to 1962 and chancellor from 1962 to 2000, during which he sought to promote the rights of African American students, improve the university's standing in research and international studies, and protect green spaces on campus.
