Two African-American students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, enroll at the University of Alabama, accompanied by federal marshals and members of the Alabama National Guard to prevent Governor George Wallace from blocking their registration. Although Hood leaves after two months, he receives a Ph.D. from the school in 1997. Vivian Malone graduates in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in business management, the first African-American student to receive a degree from the University.
