Dr. Anna Lewis was born on October 25, 1885, to William Ainsworth Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Moore.
She attended the University of California, Berkeley for her bachelor and master of arts degrees, in 1915 and 1918, respectively. In 1930, Anna received her PhD from the University of Oklahoma, with the dissertation “A History of the Arkansas River Region, 1541-1800,” becoming the first woman to earn a doctoral degree from the University of Oklahoma. Anna was an alumna initiate to Phi Chapter at the University of Oklahoma.
Anna spent 39 years teaching history at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, formerly the Oklahoma College for Women. She specialized in Oklahoma history and became an accomplished lecturer.
Anna collected and donated historical materials related to her life and work with the intention of creating a museum. The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Nash Library has digitized this collection and created the site, Chatah Hopake Holissochi, meaning “Choctaw Historian.”
