During World War II, a number of Alpha Phis relocate to Birmingham, Alabama, either because their husbands were serving overseas or their own contributions to the war effort. Many Alpha Phis joined the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter during their time in the area, including Virginia Adams (Zeta-Goucher College), who worked as a nurse's aid.
